We all remember 'Dorothy & the Wizard of Oz' from the ruby slippers to the emerald city. The Scarecrow, the Tin Man and the Cowardly Lion all join Dorothy on her journey to find the Wizard because they want something precious from him. They're all missing something, but the answer lies in the way they perceive themselves. What they end up getting is self-esteem. So here are some timeless lessons that every parent can teach their kids from Dorothy and her friends’ journey.

#1: It is okay to be different
Dorothy Gale: What kind of a horse is that? I've never seen a horse like that before!
The Wizard of Oz: And never will again, I fancy. There's only one of him and he's it. He's the Horse of a Different Colour, you've heard tell about. (Source:
Dorothy and her three friends she picked up on the way to see the wizard were all different from one another. Their differences allowed them to work together on their journey and meet the wizard.

#2: Sometimes you just need a little help from your friends.
Dorothy Gale: [to the Scarecrow] I think I'll miss you most of all. (Source:
Dorothy’s friends are always ready to help on her adventures. And Dorothy needs as much help as she can get, because even though she is a Princess of Emerald City, she’s still a stranger in a strange land, and has to face off against some pretty powerful entities.

#3: Real Courage is facing your fears.
The Cowardly Lion: What makes a King out of a slave? Courage! (Source:
The Lion is afraid of his own shadow, which to be fair, is because it’s a pretty big shadow. The one thing he isn’t afraid of is admitting how afraid he is. And that takes courage!

#4: Don't try to be something you're not.
The Wizard of Oz: A heart is judged not by how much you love, but by how much you are loved by others. (Source:
The wonderful Wizard of Oz is in fact, not a wizard. But, Dorothy and her friends were disappointed to realise he isn't a wizard at all. In the end, it is easier to be who you really are instead of having to cover with someone you'd rather be.

#5: Follow your dreams.
The Wicked Witch of the West: Take special care of those ruby slippers, I want those most of all. Now fly! Fly! (Source:
The Wicked Witch promises Wilhelmina (wicked witch in training) that if she gets the ruby red slippers and sets her free, then they will rule Oz together. If you want something bad enough, nothing can stop you from getting it. Keep following your wishful path.

#6: There's no place like home.
Dorothy Gale: Oh, but anyway, Toto, we're home. Home! And this is my room, and you're all here. And I'm not gonna leave here ever, ever again, because I love you all, and - oh, Auntie Em - there's no place like home! (Source:
Dorothy is a princess, but still a farm girl at heart. She can put on a frilly ball gown, but that won’t stop her from rolling down a perfect “rolling” hill. Running about around the Oz she realises that home is the best place to be.
